Behind the FAWM series #2 - "Mittens & Magnets"

As soon as I saw it, I knew it was a winner.
"Mittens & Magnets," what a title!

This is a title from my first year of FAWM (2009) and it was the FIRST song I ever wrote as part of the February Album Writing Month challenge.

The concept of people loving each other and staying together was the first thing that came to mind, just reading that line.

Mittens come in a pair, magnets are drawn to each other, and this of course, made me think of my own sweet family.

I feel REALLY hesitant about writing songs for the people I love.
What is genuine and heartfelt one moment, is trite and cheesy the next and that slope is slipperier than you can imagine.

There aren't words strong enough to convey what my husband and my daughters mean to me, and I shy away from trying to express that for fear of producing something that would likely get played to hundreds of tearful ladies at a mother daughter tea.

What I loved about the title, "Mittens & Magnets," was how the quirkiness, the alliteration and the simplicity in the phrase set the mood for the entire song before it was even written.

As it took shape, it began to remind me of a children's song that could be enjoyed by adults.
And the beauty of a children's song, is that you can write about familial love without it sounding sappy as it might in a country song, or a Celine inspired ballad.

I wanted to write something simple, without flowery language - something sweet without being gushy, and something my little girls could understand and sing along to.

And DO they!
They run up on stage and sing along every chance they get.

So, to refresh your memory, the audio and the lyrics are below.

Do you hope Mittens & Magnets is on the new record?

What is your favorite, simple love song?

Mittens & Magnets

Title Submitted by (my sweet friend!) Katy Bowser

Never met a man I loved any better
Never knew a heart that was closer to mine
How we got together – it was nearly a disaster
But when we got together, everything was fine

We know there is nothing better
Than me for you and you for me
We will always stay together
Like mittens and magnets are we

Never saw a face I knew any better
Never heard a cry so sweet to ears
You’re lovely as the sunshine, brighter than starlight
And all our love is yours, so dry your tears

This is one of my favorite songs. It was the song I used to rock Saraa to sleep when she was a baby. It was the song she always calmed to.

If I were getting married again I would find a way to use this song in my wedding somehow. Maybe our first dance? :-)
